“Seven years I suppose are enough to change every pore of one’s skin, & every feeling of one’s mind,” Jane Austen wrote to her sister, Cassandra, in April of 1805 (Letter #43 in Deirdre Le Faye’s standard edition of Austen’s correspondence).
But twenty-six years, it seems, aren’t even enough to change one’s outfit. Or so we might conclude from the whimsical ten-second video that actor Alicia Silverstone posted to TikTok earlier this month, in her debut on the video-sharing social network known for its extremely short attention span.
In the clip, Silverstone is wearing the yellow-and-black-plaid Dolce & Gabbana blazer – or perhaps a convincing facsimile thereof – that she made famous in the opening scenes of Clueless, the immortal 1995 Emma update that launched her star.
The original version gives us Silverstone walking through a crowd of fellow teenagers and repelling a boy’s clumsy hug with a disgusted, “Eww! Get off of me! As if!” The TikTok version gives us the same scene, except with Silverstone’s ten-year-old son, Bear, in the role of unwanted admirer. Adorably, after Silverstone gives him the iconic brushoff, she pulls him back in for a hug and a kiss.
Enjoy it while it lasts, Alicia. If he’s anything like my kids, in a year or two, he’ll be the one hissing, “Eww! Mom! Get off of me!”
